Deposit types

reference · Reviewed 2026-07-30 · FEAT-0011 GA

A deposit is prepaid money that settles your Rescale charges as you consume them. Rescale issues four types, each able to pay for a different set of charges, which is what lets an organization keep funding for software separate from funding for compute.

What each type covers

The four types differ only in which charges they are allowed to pay for.

TypeCovers
Rescale DepositAll non-software charges: compute, platform, storage, transfer, VPN, license proxy, license host, workstation license, IP address, adjustments, and Software Publishing professional services
Software-only DepositOn-demand software license charges only, for the software named on the deposit
Platform DepositPlatform charges only
Infrastructure DepositEverything except software, platform, and Software Publishing professional services

The Rescale Deposit is the general-purpose type and the one most organizations hold. The other three exist to separate a category out for accounting purposes, and Rescale issues them as part of your agreement rather than you choosing between them when you buy. If you need a category of usage funded and tracked separately, that is a conversation with your account team.

How a deposit is scoped

A deposit's type governs what it can pay for. Its scope governs who can spend it, and every deposit is scoped in at least one way.

Each deposit is assigned to one or more workspaces, and it can only be consumed from those. A single deposit can serve several workspaces at once, which is how an organization funds a group of teams from one pool.

Beyond that, a deposit can optionally be narrowed to a single project, so that only workloads submitted under that project draw on it, or reserved for one named user through the Exclusive to User field. Both are optional and most deposits use neither.

If you need to move funds between workspaces after a deposit has been issued, Rescale can transfer them on request.

What each deposit records

Every deposit in the admin portal carries the following fields, and the two amount columns are the pair most often misread.

FieldMeaning
Deposit IDAuto-generated identifier, worth quoting in a support conversation
Date IssuedWhen the deposit was issued
TypeRescale, Software-only, Platform, or Infrastructure
Compatible SoftwareSoftware deposits only: which software this deposit covers
Original AmountThe amount originally deposited
Total TransferredAmount moved out to another deposit
Amount after TransferOriginal Amount minus Total Transferred
RemainingAmount after Transfer minus consumption to date
Expiration DateThe last date on which the deposit can cover usage
WorkspacesExternal IDs of the workspaces authorized to consume it
Exclusive to UserOptional: the user it is reserved for
Consumption ReportDownloads a detailed CSV breakdown of what consumed it

Amount after Transfer accounts for transfers but ignores usage entirely, so it will often look healthy on a deposit that is nearly spent. Remaining is the figure that tells you what is actually left to spend.
