Live-tail a running job
Live Tailing shows you the last lines of a file while the solver is still writing it. Use it to watch residuals converge, confirm a run reached a given timestep, or catch an error without waiting for the job to finish.
Before you start: the job must be in the Running Job stage. Live tailing has nothing to show before your solver starts writing.
Tail a file
- Open the job and click Status.
- In the Active Runs table, select the run you want to follow. A single Basic job has one run; a DOE or Optimization job has one per design point.
- In the adjacent column, click the file you want to tail.
The most recent lines appear in the Live Tailing pane and keep updating as the solver writes.
For most solvers, process_output.log shows you overall progress. For convergence specifically, tail the solver's own residual file, those are the .out, .live, or .dat files. See reading logs for which file answers which question.
Control the view
Hover over the Live Tailing pane to reveal its actions in the top right:
Refresh the file list
The list of available files does not update on its own. If your solver has created a file since you opened the tab, click Refresh to pick it up. This is the most common reason a file you expect to see isn't listed.
Capture a snapshot mid-run
Live tailing shows you one file. To capture a point-in-time copy of every file in a run while the job is still going, use Snapshots from the Active Runs table. This is the right tool when you want to inspect intermediate results without stopping the job.
Limits
- 800 KB maximum. Live Tailing won't open files larger than this. Download a copy instead.
- One file at a time per pane.
- Running jobs only. Once a job completes, use the Results page rather than Live Tailing.
Troubleshooting
The file I want isn't listed. Click Refresh. The list is not live.
Output has stopped updating but the job is still running. Either the solver is between write flushes, or it's stuck. Check cluster health: flat CPU on cores you expect to be busy means the solver isn't progressing.
A workstation job attachment is stuck at "Attaching". See Job Attachment Stuck at 'Attaching' Status on Workstation.
