Monitor ANSYS Fluent remotely

how-to · Reviewed 2026-07-30 GA

For a long Fluent batch job, you can attach the Fluent Remote Visualization Client to the running solver to inspect plots, pause the run, and change parameters without resubmitting.

Before you start

All of these are required:

  • SSH connectivity enabled in the job's Job Settings.
  • A workstation running the exact same Fluent version as the batch job. A Rescale workstation or your own local Linux machine both work — the versions must match.
  • Linux. The remote visualization client is Linux-only.
  • Stand-alone Fluent. Workbench is not supported.

No ANSYS license is needed to run flremote itself.

Steps

1. Add the remote flag to the batch command

Add -sifile=rescale_remote.txt to your Fluent batch command.

Optionally pin the port range. You need at least two ports:

-setenv="REMOTING_PORTS=40000/portspan=10"

2. Read the connection details

Once the job reaches the Running Job stage, open rescale_remote.txt from the Live Tailing window. It contains the server's private IP, port, and password.

3. Open a reverse SSH tunnel

From your workstation, tunnel to the batch job, forwarding the port from rescale_remote.txt to localhost.

4. Point the client at localhost

Edit your local copy of rescale_remote.txt and replace the server's private IP with localhost. The port and password stay as they are.

5. Connect

Run flremote, load the modified file, and click Connect.

You can open up to six remote visualization sessions per client instance.

Do not press Interrupt

Interrupt in the Fluent remote client stops the entire Rescale batch job. There is no confirmation prompt.

Automating the tunnel

Steps 3 and 4 are the tedious ones and can be scripted:

Other solvers

The same pattern (tunnel from a workstation to a running batch job) applies to other solvers with their own clients:
