On-Demand Licenses

concept · Reviewed 2026-08-27

On-demand licenses are software license files that Rescale hosts and manages. Request access during job setup, and your workspace can use the software without connecting to an external license server.

An on-demand license is a file that controls access to software application features. These license files are created by software vendors and hosted on Rescale for convenient workspace-level access, eliminating the need for users to manage their own license servers or files.

This is useful for teams that do not have a company license agreement with the ISV, for short-term or exploratory work, and when standing up a license server is not worth the overhead.

How it works

When you request access to an on-demand license, Rescale provisions workspace-level access so that any authorized user in your workspace can submit jobs with that software without additional license configuration. The license files are created and updated by the software vendors, and Rescale manages the license server infrastructure.

Requesting access to an on-demand license

Access to on-demand licenses is granted per workspace. To request access:

  1. Start creating a new job and proceed to the software selection step.
  2. Select the software you want to use.
  3. In the license options section, look for Use On-Demand License.
  4. Click Request Access.

This creates an email request that the Rescale team will review. You should receive a response within 3 business days. Once approved, the on-demand license will be available for your workspace, and you will be able to select it when setting up jobs with that software.

If you do not receive a response within 3 business days, contact support@rescale.com for assistance.

Benefits of on-demand licensing

  • Convenience. No need to manage your own license servers.
  • Workspace-level access. Available to all authorized users in your workspace.
  • Vendor-managed. License files are maintained and updated by software vendors.

When to use on-demand licensing

On-demand licensing is a good fit when you do not have an existing license agreement with the software vendor, when you want to evaluate or prototype with a solver, or when you want to avoid the IT overhead of managing a license server, firewall rules, and network configuration.

If you already own licenses and have a company license server, consider using the Company License Proxy or License Hosting instead to bring your existing licenses to Rescale.
